Santa Clara County Office of Education and First 5 Santa Clara County’s survey of kindergarten parents in the Fall of 2020 has just been released. You can find a copy of the report here. The report gives a comprehensive account of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parents of young children in our community, and those impacts have been significant. More than 90% of families report an effect on their work lives but those impacts varied across the family income spectrum. Almost 50% of families with incomes below $4,000 per month reported temporary job loss, compared with less than 10% for families making over $12,000 per month. In contrast, more than 80% of families with incomes over $12,000 per month reported working from home with children present, compared to approximately 10% of families making less than $4,000 per month being in that situation.  Families reported increased stress and decreased access to health care, child development and early learning supports, but also increased interaction and engagement with their children. The report concludes with a series of policy recommendations to support children, families and early learning providers recover from the pandemic.
